Te Aponga Uira (TAU) wishes to appoint an Electrical Engineer. TAU is a government-owned utility responsible for generating, distributing and retailing electricity on the main island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. The role assists with the development, maintenance, and operations of the power system on Rarotonga. It covers responsibilities in both the Network and Generation divisions, with responsibilities in TAU’s Renewable Energy development.


In particular, the Electrical Engineer will be responsible for preparing project proposals and assisting in planning, designing and implementing of the projects. Planning maintenance programmes, continuously monitoring the technical performance of all renewable energy systems and supporting the development of major works associated with alternative energy initiatives undertaken to support Cook Islands national renewable energy goals. The Electrical Engineer will ensure compliance with strategic and regulatory requirements and will collaborate fully with TAU’s other divisional teams through consultation, cross divisional engineering support.


This is a hands-on position; the successful applicant will have excellent time management and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to plan ahead, provide technical support and guidance to operational staff, assist in troubleshooting, and resolve system issues.


The position reports to the Chief Engineer and Chief Executive Officer as required.


The successful applicant will need a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from a recognised institution with a minimum of 5 years practising as an electrical engineer, preferably in the utility or energy sector, knowledge of electrical systems, equipment and components with proficiency in engineering software tools, such as AutoCAD for design and analysis, along with an awareness of industry trends regarding alternative energy generation.
